The Fostering Digital Citizenship Program from Adolfo Ibáñez University delivered the "Educating in the Digital Age" workshop to about fifty staff members from the Municipality of Peñalolén. The session took place last Friday, October 10th, in the auditorium of Building E at the UAI's Peñalolén campus.

The initiative, which brought together employees from all of the municipality’s divisions, aimed to provide technical skills to strengthen their knowledge of the digital world, identify risks and opportunities, and in turn, apply these tools in their daily work.

The course covered topics ranging from legal aspects and the management of digital risks in the school environment to the cognitive and socio-emotional development needs of children and adolescents. Among the topics discussed were the importance of a positive online school climate, risk management, and preparing to confront disinformation.

Viviana Vicencio, head of the municipality’s Gender Secretariat, highlighted the relevance of the training. “Sessions like today’s are relevant as they update and instill technical skills in our municipal teams, with a special emphasis on preventing digital gender-based violence,” she stated.

For her part, Francesca Giseleire, head of the Department for the Promotion of Rights and Social Welfare, emphasized the practical utility of the content. “This is very important because we work daily with municipal schools, state-subsidized private schools, and all the kindergartens in the community. Furthermore, the reality we experience in our neighborhoods provides our team with tools to face challenges, guide, and support families, teachers, and everyone involved with children,” she affirmed.

The training featured a panel of distinguished experts, including: Amaranta Alfaro, a journalist with a Master’s in Media, Communication, and Cultural Studies; Carlos Franco, director of the UAI Data Observatory and a specialist in disinformation and fact-checking; Fernando Medina, a lawyer and expert on school climate; María Josefina Escobar, a Doctor in Psychotherapy; and Luis Enrique Santana, a psychologist and director of the “Formando Ciudadanía Digital” (Building Digital Citizenship) Program.

With this training, it is expected that municipal teams will be able to directly apply what they have learned in their community work, strengthening the support network for families, children, and youth in the face of the challenges of the digital environment.
